Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is often referred to as laughing gas, because it provides recipients with a feeling of euphoria. It is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen. Nitrous oxide helps to ease patient’s fears to help them relax during their visit, and to receive dental treatment in a comfortable and safe manner. Dr. Eman Ghoneim has found that children do well with nitrous oxide when couple of teeth need to be treated and reduces the gag reflex which can interfere with effective dental treatment

Dr. Eman Ghoneim will only recommend nitrous after evaluating your child, and she will discuss her recommendations with you thoroughly.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

A mask is placed over the patient’s nose and are instruct to breathe in and out with the nose. The mask is similar to an oxygen mask and is not painful in any way. Nitrous oxide is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. Dr. Eman will ask you to breathe normally through your nose and within a few minutes, patient should start feeling the effects. Light-headed and or tingling in arms and legs is to be expected. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed. The biggest side effect we find with nitrous oxide is that it can cause nausea or emesis, so we ask that the child refrains from eating a large meal two hours before their scheduled appointment.
